Senior Checklist – The FAFSA

Senior year just started for students around the country. If you are a college-bound student, tackling the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) should be on your senior checklist. The FAFSA opens up on October 1st, 2018 for the 2019-20 academic year. Although it may seem that there is a lot of time, beware! The FAFSA has many different deadlines for different states and colleges. In other words, the sooner you complete everything, the better.

When it comes to deadlines, there are three critical FAFSA deadlines you should know about. First of all, there is the College Deadline that varies from school to school, and usually, it is fairly early in the year. It is important to check the websites of the individual colleges to verify the deadlines. It is possible to use previous year’s tax returns in order to complete FAFSA application early. Secondly, there is a State Deadline. Many states have limited funding when it comes to providing aid to its students, so submitting one’s FAFSA early is always a good idea. Finally, the Federal Deadline is usually at the end of the academic year. After June 30th, the application submission closes. However, funds are limited so submitting your application ASAP is once again very important.
